FREDERICTON (GNB) – Nominations open today for 14 municipal and rural community byelections as well as elections in three newly-formed communities. Nominations close at 2 p.m. on April 17 and candidates have until 5 p.m. on April 20 to withdraw their names. Elections are scheduled for May 12.

If more than one candidate is nominated for a position a byelection will be held. The communities with vacant positions are as follows:

●    Alma (one councillor at large);
●    Bathurst (one councillor at large);
●    Campobello Island (one ward councillor);
●    Clair (two councillors at large);
●    Grande-Anse (one councillor at large);
●    Lac Baker (one councillor at large);
●    Maisonnette (one councillor at large);
●    Minto (one councillor at large);
●    Millville (one councillor at large);
●    Moncton (one ward councillor);
●    New Maryland (one councillor at large);
●    Sainte-Léolin (one councillor at large);
●    Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël (one councillor at large); and
●    Saint-Quentin (mayor, one councillor at large).

The three newly formed communities and the vacant positions are:

•    Cocagne (mayor, four ward councillors);
•    Grand Tracadie-Sheila (mayor, 10 ward councillors); and
•    Hanwell (mayor, two councillors at large, four ward councillors).

"Residents are being given the opportunity to help shape the future of the community," said Chief Electoral Officer Michael Quinn. "In all cases these are important positions, which allow people to give back in a meaningful way to the place they call home."

Nomination papers can be picked up from a municipal returning officer, at local municipal offices or can be printed from the Elections New Brunswick website.
