FREDERICTON (GNB) - Municipal byelections will be held on Monday, May 12 in 13 communities across the province:

●    Alma (one councillor at large)
●    Bathurst (one councillor at large)
●    Grande-Anse (one councillor at large)
●    Lac Baker (one councillor at large)
●    Minto (one councillor)
●    Moncton (one councillor, Ward 2)
●    New Maryland (one councillor at large)
●    Saint-Léolin (one councillor at large)
●    Sainte-Marie-Saint Raphaël (one councillor at large)
●    Saint-Quentin (mayor, one councillor at large)

Candidates for positions on council were elected by acclamation in Campobello Island, Clair, Maisonette and Millville. In Saint-Quentin the position of mayor was filled by acclamation.  A second council position in Clair remained vacant as only one candidate filed nomination papers for the two vacancies prior to today's nomination deadline.

In addition, first elections will be held in the new municipalities of Cocagne, Hanwell and Grand Tracadie-Sheila for the following positions:

●    Cocagne (one mayor, councillors Ward 1 and Ward 2)
●    Hanwell (councillors Ward 1 and Ward 3)
●    Grand Tracadie-Sheila (one mayor, councillors Wards 1-8)

The position of mayor, both councillors at large and the Ward 2 councillor in Hanwell were all filled by acclamation.  No candidate filed nomination papers for Ward 4 in Hanwell.

If a candidate wishes to withdraw his or her name from the ballot, he or she has until 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 20 to do so.

Voters in municipalities holding by-elections or first elections will go to the polls on Monday May 12.  Advance voting takes place Saturday, May 3, 2014.
