FREDERICTON (GNB) – After the success of a pilot program aimed at increasing student voting in 2010, Elections New Brunswick will expand its campus outreach to include voting stations at 13 post-secondary institutions across the province for the Sept. 22 provincial general election.

“By placing voting stations on post-secondary campuses, eligible student voters are offered convenience and accessibility in voting,” said chief electoral officer for New Brunswick Michael Quinn. “We have also developed a communications plan that will make it easier for students to get the information they need in regards to voting.”

The campus voting stations are located at the University of New Brunswick’s Fredericton and Saint John campuses; Université de Moncton’s campuses in Moncton, Edmundston and Shippagan; St. Thomas University; Mount Allison University; the Collège Communitaire du Nouveau-Brunswick’s Edmundston and Campbellton campuses; and the New Brunswick Community College campuses in Moncton, Fredericton and Saint John. Students attending the Collège Communitaire du Nouveau-Brunswick in Shippagan are invited to use the station at the neighbouring Université de Moncton’s Shippagan campus.

“We want to make voting as accessible as possible for students,” said Quinn. “Building off the success of our pilot program, we look forward to working with various student organizations to promote our campus voting stations and the convenience they provide.”

The campus voting stations will be open Sept. 15-19. Students attending post-secondary institutions have the unique option to vote for a candidate in the electoral district where they ordinarily reside or for a candidate in the electoral district where they live while attending school.

Students have the option to vote at their designated polling location or at any of the returning offices.
