FREDERICTON (GNB) – Nominations have opened for 18 municipal and rural community byelections to be held Monday, May 4. Nominations close at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 10, and candidates have until Monday, April 13 to withdraw their names.

If more than one candidate is nominated for a position, a byelection will be held. The communities with vacant positions are as follows:

  • Alma (one councillor at large);
  • Baker-Brook (two councillors at large);
  • Beresford (councillor for Ward A);
  • Campobello Island (councillor for Ward 2);
  • Fredericton (councillor for Ward 12);
  • Grande-Anse (one councillor at large);
  • Hanwell (councillor for Ward 4);
  • Kedgwick (councillor for Ward 1);
  • Lac Baker (mayor);
  • Lamèque (one councillor at large);
  • Miramichi (one councillor at large);
  • Nigadoo (one councillor at large);
  • Oromocto (councillors for Ward 2 and 3)
  • Port Elgin (one councillor at large);
  • Rogersville (one councillor at large);
  • St. Hilaire (two councillors at large);
  • Saint-Quentin (one councillor at large); and
  • Shediac (one councillor at large).

Close to 38,000 residents are eligible to vote in the byelections.

“Elections New Brunswick strongly encourages residents in these communities to consider running for these positions”, said Municipal Electoral Officer Michael Quinn. “These are important positions, which allow people to give back to the communities where they live.”

Nomination papers may be picked up from a municipal returning officer, at local municipal offices, or they can be printed from the Elections New Brunswick website.

Elections New Brunswick is accepting the names and resumes of individuals interested in working during the elections. Those may be dropped off or faxed to the appropriate municipal returning officers or interested individuals may complete an employment application online.
