FREDERICTON (GNB) – Nominations have opened in eight communities to fill 10 vacancies in byelections to be held Monday, Nov. 14. Nominations close at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21.

Also on Nov. 14, residents in the local service districts of the parishes of Clair, Baker Brook, Lac Baker, Saint-François, Saint-Hilaire and Madawaska, will vote on forming a rural community including the villages of Clair, Baker-Brook, Saint-François de Madawaska and St. Hilaire.

Returning Offices will open Tuesday, Oct. 11.

If more than one candidate is nominated for a position, a byelection will be held. The communities with vacant positions are:

• Baker Brook (one councillor-at-large);
• Clair (one councillor-at-large);
• Drummond (two councillors-at-large);
• Maisonnette (one councillor-at-large);
• Meductic (one councillor-at-large);
• Miramichi (mayor and one councillor-at-large);
• Moncton (councillor for Ward 4); and
• Saint-André (councillor for Ward 5).

About 29,000 voters are eligible in the byelections.

“Elections New Brunswick strongly encourages residents in these communities to consider offering for these important positions,” said Municipal Electoral Officer Michael Quinn. “Serving on council allows individuals to give back to their communities.”

Nomination papers may be picked up from a municipal returning officer or at local municipal offices, or they can be printed from the Elections New Brunswick website.
